Food & Cuisine in Ilha do Mel & Paranaguá
Restaurants
A decent meal is easy to find anywhere in Paranaguá or on Ilha do Mel island! Delicious, fresh fish is served in all the mini bistros or inns. Expect higher competitive prices on Ilha do Mel as compared to the mainland (between R$ 10 and R$ 25 for a simple meal).
The best restaurants on Ilha do Mel are 'Mar e Sol' (Brasilia) which is near the lighthouse, and 'Fim da Trilha' (Encantadas). In Mar e Sol you can ask for a "prato feito", for example, rice, beans, fish and salad and at Fim da Trilha there are spicy paellas, pasta and other international dishes.
You could also eat at your hotel as most offer simple fare such as fish and rice for competitive prices.
Typical food
The typical dish of Ilha do Mel is called "arroz lambe-lambe" - rice cooked with sea fruit and tomatoes. Its translation would be rice "lick-lick", as locals use to eat the sea fruit with fingers and lick it afterwards!
In Restaurant Burghesia in Pontal do Sul you will find another typical dish of Paranás coast: "cambira". It is a traditional dish from the time as there was no electricity and fish should be kept with salt. The fish tainha has been sun-dried with salt and prepared afterwards with several spices.
Nightlife
Though the nightlife here is restricted to weekends and public holidays it is interesting. Vivid native forro, traditional Northeast Brazilian music, rock and reggae, you'll find it all.
The Barranco Bar, on the beach, is a bar/restaurant by day and a hot spot by night. During tourist season music livens up nightly, but is limited to special shows during low season. Rocking to forro music, the partying and drinking starts late at night and continues till the wee hours. As the island has almost no light, a flashlight is a must.
After a big night out one can work up an appetite for a succulent local dish made of fresh fish or prawns.

Burghezia
This restaurant rescued a typical dish of Paraná called "Cambira" from oblivion. The main ingredients are salt or smoked fish, banana and cassava flour. This combination results in a delicious manioc meal and was the basic diet of pioneers of the Paraná coast. Salting and drying the fish was a necessary to conserve the fish for storage, especially when great schools of palombetas and mullets were caught off the beaches.

Casa do Barreado - Paranaguá
The tables are set on the balcony and in the garden of the owner's house. The specialty is the "Barreado", a famous typical dish of Parana state. The dish consists of braised meat, served with rice and cassava flour. The secret in the preparation is the cooking time. Barreado is cooked in a sealed clay pot for about twenty hours resulting in tender meat that literally falls apart in a thick and very very very tasty broth. Traditionally the dish is accompanied of bananas, oranges and seafood as well. The white rum and home-made desserts produced in the area are included in the price of the meal.
Casa do Barreado is famous for its award-winning Barreado. The restaurant was voted Best of Parana by Guia Quatro Rodas for the tenth consecutive year.
The restaurant opens every weekend and during the week, by reservations only.
