His goal is to create a place that completely focused on environmental protection, where their guests find everything they need for a completely comfortable stay on the island.

Pousada Estrela do Mar is recognized on Ilha do Mel and the surrounding area for its initiatives in protecting the environment and supporting the local community. Some actions held by Pousada Estrela do Mar are listed below:

• Training and hiring of local workers
• Supporting a local NGO, Amaré that educates children living in the island
• Use of solar heating and rainwater
• Recycling of organic waste through humus production (composting)

This project brought recognition to Estrela do Mar by several universities that bring their students to the island to understand the system created by Gilberto. The system permits the total use of organic waste produced by the pousada transforming it into humus which can become an economically valuable product.
